The Top 10 Things About My Trip So Far
- Not sitting next to anyone during all 3 flights. I was especially glad of this during the connection from LA to NYC, when I got a row to myself and could watch the descent into my new city (as Karli suggested I do).
- Plane food. QANTAS does plane food like no other. Beef and chorizo hot pot, snacks brought to me 2 minutes after realising I needed some, three breakfasts in different time zones...
- Free booze. Not wanting to dehydrate myself, I mostly had water and tea during my 21 hours in the air. I had white wine on the Sydney-LA leg to calm myself down (I was rushed through customs being told my flight had closed, when in fact it hadn't started boarding yet. Phew!) and a very strong celebratory drink before landing in NYC.
- Using American money. My first purchase with green paper money was a mountain dew, a copy of Vogue and some Mentos from Maria at Crews of California in LAX.
- Not having to carry many bags. The only good thing to come out of your bags being left behind is that you don't have to haul them through the airport. That is the only good thing about this though. I have greasy hair, a smelly body, limited underwear, 1 pair of shoes and no adapters to connect my laptop to American outlets. I'm also wearing someone else's dress.
- Arriving at my sublet to a clean bed in front of a window with a fan on. New York gets hot in summer, did you hear?
- Using a toilet made for human-sized things. I had never used a plane toilet before my Sydney-LA flight. I've used them 4 times now, and do not enjoy doing so. I'd rather poo out a window, thank you very much.
- Keeping a diary. I've not done this since leaving my teens, but as per the suggestion/demand of my stepmum to write down what I did/saw/ate to show her, I updated my journal a lot during the flight and I'm really digging doing it again.
- Nicolette! Not long after arriving, Nicolette and I tweeted each other to arrange a quick dinner date. She and Austin took me to Pop's for a burger, before showing me around Bedford Ave. She also heard about my luggage dilemma and brought me some clothes to tide me over. The sweetest!
- Being here. It's been months of planning and alternating between being excited, pensive and outright scared, but I'm so happy I've done it!

I got up this morning and headed to Cafe Colette for breakfast, before catching my first subway into Manhattan. I sorted out my US phone situation before heading to Flatiron to see the office where I'll be working, come Monday.
It's all happening.

YAY! It is all happening. How excitement. Good girl with the diary-ing and looking at the window. I hope your luggage arrives soon. Can't wait to read more of your lists/posts. I'm sitting in a classroom watching Jaws so am going to spend the year living vicariously through you.
ReplyDeleteso jealous of you! i'll be heading to london in august, living there, then hopefully moving to nyc in feb, so scary, i love your writin' a list idea though! x
ReplyDeleteim so full of questions right now. if this were a sitcom my hair would be full of curlers and it would be an awkward time of the night and we'd be skyping and talking about how jealous i am of you in new york and youd be virtually showcasing your NYC pad.
ReplyDeletewhy is it that this would be a sitcom? pretty much only coz the picture quality would be so much better and i wanna see as much NYC details as i possibly can.
and please, for the love of god. write about all of your food escapades while youre there. legit. all of them.
So excited for all your New York updates! I hope you're having an amazing time so far, missing luggage aside xx
